This week’s review of Diplomacy hinted at my deep love of war games but they’re the kind of game that people don’t want to touch with a ten foot pole. The sad fact is that war games have a pretty bad reputation as being mathy, wonky and very complicated, but I think that the real reason people stay away from them is because of conflict. Monopoly attracts the ire of most board gamers. A lot of us, myself included, think that it is one of the main reasons why it’s SO HARD to get new players into the hobby. They have terrible memories of this shitty game, remember how it would go on for hours, and think “nope, not for me” when you start talking about the amazing things that are going on in board gaming right now.
