Myles’ Number 5: Discovering Game Grumps
If YouTube is over-saturated with any one type of content other than videos of people’s pets, it has got to be videos of people playing video games. Seeing as there was just SO MUCH of it, I thought there had to be someone out there doing something new and exciting with it. I found everything from a show called Iron Gamer to various videos of people digging around actual GameStop dumpsters looking for sweet deals. Then I found Game Grumps. Game Grumps was one of the only ones to make my Subscriber feed.
Game Grumps is a channel that features two best-dudes, Arin and Danny. They do something called a ‘We Play’ which, from what I can tell is the plural ‘Let’s Play’. They play everything from new console games to retro games and sometimes they even play Indie games. What makes it different from all the other gameplay videos? These two dudes are HILARIOUS. It’s like two people doing a comedy podcast while playing a game. Sometimes the game is the spotlight, but more often than not they’ll start talking about other things while they play, subtly endearing themselves to us.
The best Game Grumps of the year has got to be “Battle Kid Fortress of Peril”, a game made in 2010 for the NES by Sivak Games. It is ONLY available as an actual NES cartridge, which is complete madness. Unless you happen to ‘know a guy’ your best bet of seeing this game is on Youtube and who better to watch play it than Arin and Danny? These guys are put through the ringer in the 3-part series and it concludes with one of the most exciting boss battles you could ever imagine…and a twist.
You couldn’t write something as good as what is captured in those three videos which really exemplifies what people love about watching others play video games on Twitch or YouTube. I never thought that I would come home from work and want to watch the new Game Grumps over any television show, but here we are. This is the world we live in now and I’m actually pretty thankful for it.
